Arles is a city of extraordinary cultural wealth; it has many preserved Roman monuments that are listed on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The city beats to the rhythm of its many celebrations, including the famous Rencontres d’Arles photography festival and its entertaining Feria bull festivals. Arles is a university town with over 1,300 students.
It is less than 30 minutes from Tarascon, a historic town with its Tarasque celebrations, and from St Martin-de-Crau, a modern city with plenty of sports and cultural resources.
You will love Fontvieille, Le Paradou and Maussane – picturesque Provencal villages set against the backdrop of the Alpilles Massif. They open up to splendid landscapes: rolling mountains covered in scrub, pine and oak forests, olive groves and lush green plains.
Boulbon, which is at the foot of La Montagnette, is also a good option for smaller budgets. This fortified complex from the Middle Ages is a provencal village with tiny
alleyways.
